Digital Filters Star in NYFW

Last Thursday, designer, Desigual, made news by incorporating infamous Snapchat filters into their New York fashion week show.  The show displayed the Spanish brand’s upcoming spring/summer 17 line.   However, all eyes were on the face as MAC cosmetics took over the makeup and to transform the models to the likeness of puppy, bumble bee, flower crown and butterfly filters.  Powders and pigments were used to form the facial components of the filters, while non-facial objects were created with the help of the Cutler/Redken team.

This goes to prove just how far Social Media has penetrated the veil of our everyday life.  The filters are universally popular and tools that most use on a daily basis.  It is the new “fresh face”, so what a unique and creative approach to a ready to wear line in today’s digital age.  With the headlines made, the show is expected to have huge influence for Halloween costume ideas.  Which filter will you choose this October?  I’m thinking the deer filter…

  1. This is so cool and really does show how important social media is for all industries. No matter who your target audience is, all businesses need to know the trends of social media. Snapchat filters are so well known and this is a great example of thinking outside the box in order to make yourself stand out. It added a unique twist to the fashion week show that I'm sure no one was expecting

  2. This is so awesome! I would've never known about this, if not for your post. I feel like they were done in a way that it was not tacky/immediately obvious what they were! It's so interesting how they used something from social media to use in the real world to make their fashion seem more relatable to the audience.

  6. I saw this on social media as well and thought it was very creative and a smart way to get people involved in NYFW. It is incredible to realize just how integrated social media is in our lives through those snapchat filters. There are few people these days that do not know the dog filter as well as all the others. We have personally used those filters and to see them on models identifies with the audience and makes you want to support that brand. Great post!

  7. Really cool article! I think love how snapchat has become tangible in this way. Also, great advertising for snapchat -- perhaps unintentional too!

  8. I think this is so great. Desigual is already such a funky brand, so they could definitely pull this off at Fashion Week. This was such a smart decision to put them ahead of the game. I can only imagine the publicity they got on all social media platforms, especially Snapchat. Just think of all the audience members snapchatting selfies and the show itself while it was going on. I know I would have. Cool post, Sav! xoxo

  9. Great post! This goes to show just how much filters have paved the way for Snapchat in recent years. It also speaks to Desiguals target audience as many of their consumers who are 15-25 will immediately recognize the filters on the models. Great use of a social media platform to reach their target audience and stay relevant at the same time. I bet their level of engagement was incredible as people were using the filters at the show, too! Great find!
